Cloud Riddles

January 14, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of weather riddles continues today with four that all have the answer ‘cloud’.

The first three of them are rhyming riddles for kids, while the fourth asks the question What Am I?

To use that fourth riddle, read your children the clue on the first line and have them guess the answer.

As the clue is that it’s something fluffy which isn’t a bunny, they might guess that it’s a cotton ball, a marshmallow, a stuffed toy or one of many other fluffy things.

If they don’t guess that the answer is a cloud, read them the second clue and have them take another guess. Keep going until they either guess that cloud is the answer or they run out of clues.

You see one when a nuclear bomb is dropped
Or after the eruption of a volcano
But it’s the weather that creates most of them
Which sometimes then drop some rain, hail, sleet or snow

~

What are all of these things being described:
Cumulus look soft and fluffy in form
Stratus has layers and cirrus is thin
Cumulonimbus is seen in a storm

~

This is something you see in the sky
You’ll need more hints though so I’ll explain
It’s sometimes fluffy and sometimes gray
And can release snow, hail or rain

~

What Am I?

I’m sometimes fluffy but I’m not a bunny
I can be a mushroom but I’m not eaten
I can drop water on you but I’m not a shower
I’m in the sky but I’m not a bird
I can cover the sun but I’m not the moon

Lightning Riddles

January 12, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

We’re starting a new series of riddles this week, with all of them having something to do with the weather.

This series begins today with six that all have lightning as their answer.

The first five of them are rhyming riddles (with the word lightning completing the fourth and fifth riddles where it’s left blank), while the sixth asks your children What Am I?

To use that final idea, read the clue on the first line to your kids and ask them to take a guess at what they think the answer is. As the clue is that it’s something on a rod but which isn’t a fish, they might guess that it’s some bait, a hook, a cat toy or something else.

If they don’t work out that it’s referring to a lightning rod, read them the second clue and ask them to take another guess. Keep doing this until they either work out that the answer is lightning or they run out of clues.

If you see this striking Earth
A tree you don’t want to be under
It’s something that lights the sky
And is closely followed by thunder

~

When there is a really bad storm
In the sky this might be seen
In Cars, it’s also the first name
Of the character McQueen

~

This is something you will see
When there is a thunderstorm
It can sometimes be a ball
And comes in forked or sheet form

~

Although it’s seen during bad weather
This might be something that you like
As it can be cool watching the sky
Light up when there’s a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ strike

~

When there’s a thunderstorm going on
You will see the sky is brightening
Because of the electrical charge
Which causes a bolt of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

~

What Am I?

I can sometimes be seen on a rod but I’m not a fish
I can be forked but I’m not a tongue
I’m bright but I’m not the sun
I’m electric but I don’t have any wires
I’m seen during a storm but I’m not a cloud

Sun Riddles

December 22, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of space riddles continues today with five that all have the sun as their answer.

These ideas can therefore also be used with our solar system and weather riddles.

The first four of these rhyme, with the word ‘sun’ completing the rhyme of the fourth riddle.

The fifth of these asks your kids What Am I? To use this one, read the clue on the first line to your children and ask them to guess what they think the answer is.

As that first clue is that it’s something that provides light which isn’t a candle, they might guess that it’s a light bulb, a fire, car headlights or something else.

If they don’t guess that the answer is the sun, read them the clue on the second line and ask them to guess again. Keep going until they either guess correctly or they run out of clues.

This can be seen up in the sky
But it is not a kite
It is a giant ball of gas
Which gives you heat and light

~

If you look up during the day
Then you will see this lit
Because it is Earth’s closest star
Around which we orbit

~

This is something in the sky
Which has a gaseous form
All the rays which it shines down
Are what help to keep us warm

~

You see it rise in the morning
And set when the day is done
It provides us with light and heat
It’s a star that’s called the _ _ _

~

What Am I?

I provide light but I’m not a candle
I’m hot but I’m not a bonfire
I have rays but I’m not an aquarium
I’m a star but I’m not a celebrity
I rise in the morning but I’m not someone getting out of bed

Rainbow Riddles

February 24, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

Carrying on with our St Patrick’s Day theme, today’s set of riddles all have an answer of ‘rainbow.’

These ideas would fit in with many of our other themes though, like the Wizard Of Oz, Christian, weather and more.

The first five of these are rhyming riddles, while the last one asks your kids What Am I?

To use the final idea, get your children to read the first clue and guess what they think the answer is.

If they’re incorrect, have them read the second line and guess again. Keep going until they either answer correctly or they run out of clues.

Violet, indigo and blue
Red, yellow, orange and green
At the end of this object
A pot of gold can be seen

~

This natural phenomenon
Cannot be seen when it is dark
For it’s caused by light hitting rain
To create a colorful arc

~

You see me in the air
But I am not a kite
I am what’s created
When water refracts light

~

To reach the land of Oz
Go ‘somewhere over’ this
To where the bluebirds fly
And your home you will miss

~

You might see this in the sky
By a waterfall it’s lower
Some say that it was first seen
After a flood by Noah

~

What Am I?

I’m curved but I’m not a banana
I’m mentioned in the first book of the Bible but I’m not a snake
I’m colorful but I’m not a parrot
I’m mentioned in a Wizard Of Oz song but I’m not a Yellow Brick Road
I’m found near a leprechaun but I’m not a pot of gold

Scarf Riddles

December 11, 2014 By Stephen Pepper

Here are several riddles for kids that have an answer of ‘scarf’.

These will therefore go well with our riddles with a winter, weather or clothing theme.

The first two of these are rhyming riddles, while the third one asks What Am I?

To use the What Am I riddle, read the first line of it to your kids and have them guess the answer. If they’re incorrect, read the second line and have them guess again. Keep reading each of the clues until they’ve either worked out the correct answer or they run out of clues.

3 Scarf Riddles For Kids

When it starts to get chilly
This item is what’s chosen
To be wrapped around your neck
So it doesn’t get frozen

~

When it is cold outside
You’ll find yourself a wreck
Without this woven thing
To wrap around your neck

~

What Am I?

I’m long but I’m not a hose pipe
I’m seen at Christmas but I’m not a Christmas tree
I’m made of fabric but I’m not a stocking
I help keep you warm but I’m not a coat
I go around your neck but I’m not a necklace
