Mercury Riddles

December 17, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

We’re continuing our series of space riddles today with four that have the answer Mercury.

These could also be used with many of our themed riddles, such as planet, solar system, metal and chemistry.

The first three of these rhyme, with the word Mercury completing the rhyme of the third one.

The fourth riddle then asks your children What Am I? To use that, read the clue on the first line to your kids and have them take a guess at the answer.

As the clue lets them know that it has the atomic symbol Hg, there’s a good chance that they won’t work out that Mercury is the answer (unless they know their periodic table!)

If they don’t guess the correct answer, read them the clue on the second line and have them guess again. Keep doing this until they either work out that the answer is Mercury or they run out of clues.

When the temperature gets higher
It makes this liquid metal rise
It is also a planet’s name
Which is the one smallest in size

~

I’m found in some thermometers
As I move up when I get hot
I’m also the smallest planet
And so Jupiter I am not

~

80 is my atomic number
And I have the symbol Hg
I’m the planet closest to the sun
Which means my name is _ _ _ _ _ _ _

~

What Am I?

I have the atomic symbol Hg but I’m not hydrogen
I’m a metal but I’m not gold
I’m a liquid but I’m not solder
I’m a Roman god but I’m not Apollo
I’m a planet but I’m not Mars

Space Shuttle Riddles

December 15, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

Here are four riddles for kids where the answer is a space shuttle. These are therefore perfect for using with all of our other space and transport riddles.

The first three of these are rhyming riddles, with the words ‘space shuttle’ completing the rhyme of the third one.

The fourth asks your kids What Am I? To use that one, read the first clue to your children and ask them to guess the answer.

As the clue says that it’s something that goes up in the air but which isn’t a balloon, they might guess that it’s a bird, airplane, kite, drone or one of many other things.

If they don’t work out that it’s a space shuttle, read them the clue on the second line and have them guess again. Keep going until they either realize that space shuttle is the answer or they run out of clues.

If you travel on one of these
An astronaut you must be
As it takes you to outer space
Where there’s zero gravity

~

This is something you will need
To get back from outer space
To launch it you need rockets
Which will move it at great pace

~

You might take a journey in this
Launching at Cape Canaveral
It could take you up to the moon
You would be in a _ _ _ _ _       _ _ _ _ _ _ _

~

What Am I?

I go up in the air but I’m not a balloon
I have wings but I’m not a bird
I can transport people but I’m not an airplane
I’ve been to the moon but I’m not an astronaut
I’ve sometimes been called Discovery but I’m not a TV channel

Mars Riddles

December 10, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

We’re starting a new series today, so over the next few weeks we’ll be publishing lots of riddles for kids which have a space theme.

To kick off the series, we have some riddles that all have Mars as their answer – these can therefore also be used with our other planet riddles.

The first couple of these rhyme, while the last one asks your children What Am I?

To use that final idea, read the clue on the first line to your kids and get them to guess what the answer is. As the clue only lets them know that it’s something red, they might answer that it’s Santa Claus, a telephone box in England or a strawberry.

If they’re incorrect, read them the clue on the second line and get them to guess again. Keep doing this until they either work out that the answer is Mars or they run out of clues.

I’m named after a Roman God
I’m the fourth planet from the sun
I am known as the red planet
And have two moons rather than one

~

If you go to outer space
And head away from the sun
The first planet you would reach
Would be this red, dusty one

~

What Am I?

I’m red but I’m not a stop light
I’m named after a Roman God but I’m not Apollo
I have a Mount Olympus but I’m not Greece
I have polar ice caps but I’m not the Arctic Circle
I’m a planet but I’m not Jupiter
