Earthquake Riddles

November 26, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

We have another set of geography riddles today with five where earthquake is the answer. These can therefore also be used with our other nature riddles.

The first four of these rhyme, with the word ‘earthquake’ completing the rhyme of the first one, while the fifth asks your children What Am I?

To use that last idea, read the first line to your kids and ask them to take a guess at the answer. As the clue says it’s something that can move things but can’t be seen, they might suggest that it’s a ghost, the Invisible Man or something else.

If they don’t guess that the answer is an earthquake, read them the clue on the second line and ask them to take another guess. Keep doing this until they either work out that it’s an earthquake or they run out of clues.

Earthquake Riddles For Kids

If you were standing still
And you felt the ground shake
There’s a very good chance
That there was an _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

~

If you feel one of these
Finding a safe place is a must
As the ground moving is caused
By vibrations in the Earth’s crust

~

When there is a big one of these
You might also feel aftershocks
These seismic waves are caused by faults
And fractures in sections of rocks

~

This natural phenomena
Is caused by tectonic plates moving
It happens along a faultline
The Richter Scale measures this thing

~

What Am I?

I can move things even though I can’t be seen but I’m not the wind
I shake but you can’t drink me
I’m measured on a special scale but I don’t weigh anything
I can knock down buildings but I’m not Godzilla
I’m the result of moving plates but I’m not an empty table
I’m caused by faults but no one has done anything wrong

River Riddles

November 5, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

We’re continuing our series of geography riddles today with five that have the answer ‘river’.

These are therefore also perfect for using with all of our other nature riddles.

The first four of these rhyme, with the fifth being a What Am I riddle. To use that last idea, read the first line to your kids and have them guess the answer.

If they don’t guess that you’re referring to a river that has a source, read them the clue on the second line and have them guess again.

Keep doing this until they either work out that the answer is river or they run out of clues.

River Riddles For Kids

I sometimes start on mountains
As they can serve as my source
I’m a body of water
Which can flow with lots of force

~

Danube, Rhine, Amazon
Nile, Thames, Ganges
Hudson and Rio Grande
What are all of these?

~

I am larger than a stream
But smaller than an ocean
I can start off in mountains
Which keeps my flow in motion

~

This is a long body of water
Which has a bank on either side
There’s a great one in Colorado
For a whitewater rafting ride

~

What Am I?

I have a source but I’m not a journalist
I have a delta but I’m not a Greek alphabet
I have banks on both sides of me but I’m not surrounded by money
I flow but I’m not a bloodstream
I’m full of water but I’m not a fish tank

Volcano Riddles

October 20, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of geography riddles continues today with six that all have volcano as their answer.

The first five of them are rhyming ones, while the sixth asks your kids What Am I?

To use that final idea, read the clue on the first line to your children and have them take a guess at the answer. As it’s something that produces ash but which isn’t a bonfire, they might guess that it’s a cigarette, BBQ or a fireplace.

If they don’t guess correctly, read them the clue on the second line and have them guess again. Keep going until they either guess that the answer is volcano or they run out of clues.

If you’re using these riddles as part of a science or chemistry activity, be sure to check out this volcano making kit.

6 Volcano Riddles For Kids

Volcano Riddles For Kids

Extinct or dormant
Or active maybe
Lava and magma
What could this thing be?

~

This can create dark clouds
But they don’t contain snow
Beware of falling ash
And the hot lava flow

~

There are 45 active ones
On the island of Java
If one of them were to erupt
You would see lots of lava

~

There was one of these called Krakatoa
Which erupted in 1883
It was heard 3,000 miles away
And was one of the worst in history

~

These are objects which can erupt
Like Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii
They pump out lava and magma
And spray ash and rock which land miles away

~

What Am I?

I produce ash but I’m not a bonfire
I can throw rocks great distances but I’m not a slingshot
I’m often a mountain but I’m not in the Himalayas
I have a crater but I’m not the moon
I erupt but I’m not someone with a bad temper

Ocean Riddles

October 15, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

For the last few weeks we’ve been publishing many different country riddles to use with your kids. We’re continuing that general theme over the next few weeks with lots of geography riddles.

That series starts today with four where the answer is ocean. The first three of them rhyme, with the word ocean completing the rhyme of the first one.

The fourth is a What Am I riddle. To use that, read your children the clue on the first line and have them guess the answer.

There are many things that have a floor – a building, a car, a shopping mall, etc – so they may not guess that the answer is ocean.

If they don’t guess the right answer, read them the second clue and have them guess again. Keep doing this until they either guess the right answer or they run out of clues.

4 Ocean Riddles For Kids

Ocean Riddles For Kids

If someone’s floating outdoors
Arms and feet in motion
There’s a good chance that they are
Swimming in the _ _ _ _ _

~

When answering this riddle
Try not to get frantic
To the east of the US
What is the Atlantic?

~

Hawaii’s surrounded by water
But it’s time to get specific
What type of body of water is
The expanse that’s called Pacific?

~

What Am I?

I have a floor but I’m not a room
I wave but have no hand
I’m wet but I’m not a towel
I have currents but no electricity
I contain fish but I’m not a tank
I cover a lot of the planet but I’m not land

Japan Riddles

October 8, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

We’re continuing our series of country riddles today with five that all have Japan as the answer.

The first four of them rhyme, with the fifth asking your kids “What Am I?”

To use the What Am I riddle, read the clue on the first line to your children and have them guess the answer.

There are quite a lot of countries that are made up of several islands, so if they don’t guess that the answer is Japan, read them the second clue and have them guess again.

Keep going until they either guess the right answer or they run out of clues.

Japan Riddles For Kids

One thing this country is known for
Are people who tend small bonsai trees
And in the first half of the year
Cherry blossom blowing in the breeze

~

This is an Asian country
Whose capital is Tokyo
They have a red and white flag
And some wear a kimono

~

I’m made up of thousands of islands
And my highest point is Mt. Fuji
I’m well known for my fast bullet train
Haikus, sumo and Hello Kitty

~

In this country if you need food
You might go and eat some sushi
And if you want to have some fun
You could sing some karaoke

~

What Am I?

I’m a country made up of many islands but I’m not Greece
I have a red and white flag but I’m not England
I’m in Asia but I’m not Indonesia
I have popular cuisine but I’m not China
I’m where you might sing karaoke but I’m not South Korea
