Candle Riddles

August 2, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

We’re continuing our series of household item riddles today with five where a candle is the answer.

The first four of these rhyme, with the word ‘candle’ completing the rhyme of the fourth one.

The fifth of these is a What Am I riddle. To use that idea, read the first line to your children and ask them to try to guess what they think the answer might be. As the clue is that it’s something that gets blown but which isn’t a bubble, they might guess it’s a nose, balloon, hair or even your mind!

If they don’t guess that it’s a candle, read them the clue on the second line and have them take another guess now that they have some additional information. Keep going until they either work out that the answer is a candle or they run out of clues.

This is something that gives light
But it is not a sun ray
It is what you will blow out
On a cake on your birthday

~

I am often long and thin
And get held inside a stick
My outside is made of wax
And inside there is a wick

~

This is found on a birthday cake
But it’s not something you bite
When one’s in a small metal cup
It is known as a tealight

~

I am something in the house
But I’m not a door handle
I’m made of wax and get lit
Which means that I’m a _ _ _ _ _ _

~

What Am I?

I get blown but I’m not a bubble
I get shorter the more I’m used but I’m not a pencil
I’m made of wax but I’m not a crayon
I can help you see in the dark but I’m not a flashlight
I’m often found on a birthday cake but I’m not icing

Umbrella Riddles

July 28, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

We’re continuing our series of riddles for kids about household items today with five that all have an umbrella as the answer. That means that these pair perfectly with our other weather riddles as well.

The first four of these are rhyming riddles, while the fifth asks your children What Am I?

To use that final riddle, read the first line of it to your kids and have them take a guess at the answer. As the clue is that it’s something which goes up when it’s used, they might guess that it’s a helicopter, an elevator or a hot air balloon.

If they don’t guess that the answer is an umbrella, read them the clue on the second line and have them take another guess. Keep going until they either realize that an umbrella is the correct answer or they run out of clues.

If you have one of these
Then dry you will remain
Hold it above your head
It will keep off the rain

~

There are times when you will get wet
But it is not because you cry
In rain hold this above your head
And it will help to keep you dry

~

If it is raining outside
You’d use one of these I bet
As it’s held above your head
To keep you from getting wet

~

I am something that goes up
Although I am not a kite
I am held over your head
To help block rain or sunlight

~

What Am I?

I go up when I’m used but I’m not a balloon
I have a handle but I’m not a car door
I get wet but I’m not a washcloth
I go above your head but I’m not mistletoe
I’m used in the rain but I’m not windshield wipers

Scissors Riddles

July 26, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

We’ve spent the last couple of months publishing riddles about items you can find around the house and we’re continuing that series today with five riddles where the answer is a pair of scissors.

These ideas therefore also work well with all of our other kitchen, office and school riddles for kids.

The first three of these are rhyming riddles, while the fourth is a one-liner that has an internal rhyme.

The fifth of these is a What Am I Riddle. To use that one, read the clue that’s on the first line to your kids and ask them to take a guess at what they think the answer might be.

As the clue is that it’s something that comes as a pair but which isn’t some socks, they might guess that it’s a pair of headphones, underwear, shoes or glasses.

If they don’t guess that the correct answer is scissors, read them the second clue and ask them to guess again. Keep doing this until they either work out that a pair of scissors is the answer or they run out of clues.

Some are used for fabric
And some are used for hair
Some are used for paper
And one is called a pair

~

This item has handles
But it isn’t a car
It also has two blades
But isn’t a razor

~

I am a household item
But I am not a clock
I’m something that beats paper
But I’m beaten by rock

~

Of these you will need a pair if you want to cut some hair

~

What Am I?

I come as a pair but I’m not socks
I have two handles but I’m not a wheelbarrow
I’m usually made of metal and plastic but I’m not a bicycle
I have blades but I’m not a helicopter
I’m sometimes used to cut hair but I’m not a razor

Light Bulb Riddles

July 21, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of household item riddles is continuing today with six where the answer is a light bulb.

The first four of these are rhyming riddles for kids, while the fifth is a one line riddle which has an internal rhyme.

The sixth of these is a What Am I riddle. To use this one, read the first line to your kids and have them take a guess at the answer. As the clue is that it’s something often used at night but which isn’t a pillow, they might guess that it’s a bed, a pair of pajamas or a toothbrush.

If they don’t guess that a light bulb is the answer, read them the second clue and have them take another guess now that they have some additional information. Keep going until they either realize that the answer is a light bulb or they run out of clues.

I can be found inside a lamp
Or on a chandelier
In cartoons I’m seen over heads
When there’s a great idea

~

When you flick its switch on the wall
Then this thing up on the ceiling
Helps stop the room from being dark
As its brightness is revealing

~

I’m a common household item
As I am found in every room
Flick a switch, my filament glows
I dispel darkness and gloom

~

This item’s name consists of two words
And around the house it can be found
The first word’s the opposite of dark
The second gets planted in the ground

~

Over your head I appear when you have a great idea

~

What Am I?

I’m often used at night but I’m not a pillow
I’m usually made of glass and metal but I’m not a mirror
I have electricity flowing through me but I’m not a USB cable
I have a filament but I’m not a toaster
I’m bright even though I don’t have any brains

Curtains Riddles

July 19, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

We’re continuing our series of riddles for kids about household items today with five where the answer is a set of curtains.

The first four of these are rhyming riddles while the fifth asks your children What Am I?

To use that fifth idea, read the clue that’s on the first line to your kids and ask them to take a guess at what they think the answer might be. As the clue is that it’s something that gets hung but which isn’t a piece of art, they might guess that it’s a photo, a shirt or a banner.

If they don’t guess that curtains is the answer, read them the second clue and ask them to take another guess. Keep doing this until they either answer correctly or they run out of clues.

These are long and made of fabric
But they’re not superhero capes
They are used to cover windows
And are often also called drapes

~

One of these is what’s lowered down
At the end of a theater show
You can find these in most houses
They block sun coming through the window

~

These are found in many houses
But it is not a set of keys
They are used to cover windows
And some showers have one of these

~

Do you have these in your home?
In front of your windows you might
They’re long and made of fabric
And they’re used to block out the light

~

What Am I?

I get hung but I’m not a piece of art
I’m found in a house but I’m not a picture frame
I’m made of fabric but I’m not a shirt
I block light but I’m not an eclipse
I cover windows but I’m not a set of blinds
