Scissors Riddles

July 26, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

We’ve spent the last couple of months publishing riddles about items you can find around the house and we’re continuing that series today with five riddles where the answer is a pair of scissors.

These ideas therefore also work well with all of our other kitchen, office and school riddles for kids.

The first three of these are rhyming riddles, while the fourth is a one-liner that has an internal rhyme.

The fifth of these is a What Am I Riddle. To use that one, read the clue that’s on the first line to your kids and ask them to take a guess at what they think the answer might be.

As the clue is that it’s something that comes as a pair but which isn’t some socks, they might guess that it’s a pair of headphones, underwear, shoes or glasses.

If they don’t guess that the correct answer is scissors, read them the second clue and ask them to guess again. Keep doing this until they either work out that a pair of scissors is the answer or they run out of clues.

Some are used for fabric
And some are used for hair
Some are used for paper
And one is called a pair

~

This item has handles
But it isn’t a car
It also has two blades
But isn’t a razor

~

I am a household item
But I am not a clock
I’m something that beats paper
But I’m beaten by rock

~

Of these you will need a pair if you want to cut some hair

~

What Am I?

I come as a pair but I’m not socks
I have two handles but I’m not a wheelbarrow
I’m usually made of metal and plastic but I’m not a bicycle
I have blades but I’m not a helicopter
I’m sometimes used to cut hair but I’m not a razor

Light Bulb Riddles

July 21, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of household item riddles is continuing today with six where the answer is a light bulb.

The first four of these are rhyming riddles for kids, while the fifth is a one line riddle which has an internal rhyme.

The sixth of these is a What Am I riddle. To use this one, read the first line to your kids and have them take a guess at the answer. As the clue is that it’s something often used at night but which isn’t a pillow, they might guess that it’s a bed, a pair of pajamas or a toothbrush.

If they don’t guess that a light bulb is the answer, read them the second clue and have them take another guess now that they have some additional information. Keep going until they either realize that the answer is a light bulb or they run out of clues.

I can be found inside a lamp
Or on a chandelier
In cartoons I’m seen over heads
When there’s a great idea

~

When you flick its switch on the wall
Then this thing up on the ceiling
Helps stop the room from being dark
As its brightness is revealing

~

I’m a common household item
As I am found in every room
Flick a switch, my filament glows
I dispel darkness and gloom

~

This item’s name consists of two words
And around the house it can be found
The first word’s the opposite of dark
The second gets planted in the ground

~

Over your head I appear when you have a great idea

~

What Am I?

I’m often used at night but I’m not a pillow
I’m usually made of glass and metal but I’m not a mirror
I have electricity flowing through me but I’m not a USB cable
I have a filament but I’m not a toaster
I’m bright even though I don’t have any brains

Curtains Riddles

July 19, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

We’re continuing our series of riddles for kids about household items today with five where the answer is a set of curtains.

The first four of these are rhyming riddles while the fifth asks your children What Am I?

To use that fifth idea, read the clue that’s on the first line to your kids and ask them to take a guess at what they think the answer might be. As the clue is that it’s something that gets hung but which isn’t a piece of art, they might guess that it’s a photo, a shirt or a banner.

If they don’t guess that curtains is the answer, read them the second clue and ask them to take another guess. Keep doing this until they either answer correctly or they run out of clues.

These are long and made of fabric
But they’re not superhero capes
They are used to cover windows
And are often also called drapes

~

One of these is what’s lowered down
At the end of a theater show
You can find these in most houses
They block sun coming through the window

~

These are found in many houses
But it is not a set of keys
They are used to cover windows
And some showers have one of these

~

Do you have these in your home?
In front of your windows you might
They’re long and made of fabric
And they’re used to block out the light

~

What Am I?

I get hung but I’m not a piece of art
I’m found in a house but I’m not a picture frame
I’m made of fabric but I’m not a shirt
I block light but I’m not an eclipse
I cover windows but I’m not a set of blinds

Fan Riddles

July 14, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of household item riddles continues today with five where the answer is a fan.

The first four of these rhyme, while the fifth one asks your kids What Am I? To use that final idea, read the first line to your children and ask them to take a guess at the answer.

As the clue is that it’s something that has blades but which isn’t a fan, they might guess that it’s a knife, a helicopter or a razor.

If they don’t guess that a fan is the correct answer, read them the clue on the second line and have them take another guess. Keep doing this until they either work out that the answer is a fan or they run out of clues.

When the temperature gets high
And hot is what you’re feeling
Something that helps cool you down
Rotates up on the ceiling

~

When held I go from side to side
When freestanding I oscillate
And when I am on a ceiling
That’s when you will see me rotate

~

I am something that spins round
But I am not a curveball
I sometimes sit on a desk
And I help to keep you cool

~

You might have one in your house
Although unlikely on a shelf
When it’s hot then it rotates
As you use it to cool yourself

~

What Am I?

I have blades but I’m not grass
I’m sometimes held in your hand but I’m not a razor
I can change speeds but I’m not a car
I spin but I’m not a washing machine
I help cool you down but I’m not air conditioning

Clock Riddles

July 12, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

For the last couple of months, we’ve been publishing a series of riddles for kids about items you can find around the house. We’re continuing that series today with six where a clock is the answer.

The first five of these are rhyming riddles, with the word ‘clock’ being placed in the gap of the fifth one to complete the word ‘clockwise.’

The sixth of these is a What Am I riddle. To use that idea, read the clue that’s on the first line to your kids and have them take a guess at what they think the answer might be.

As the clue is that it’s something that’s usually round but which isn’t a pizza base, they might guess that it’s a donut, a ball or a burger.

If they don’t guess that the answer is a clock, read them the second clue and ask them to guess again. Keep going until they either realize that a clock is the answer or they run out of clues.

I’m something that is often round
But I’m not a pizza base
I have hands but don’t have fingers
And have numbers on my face

~

I am something that has a face
But I don’t ever wear a cap
I am something that tells the time
Although I do not have a strap

~

Although this item has a face
It’s not able to smile
An old version of one of these
Was known as a sundial

~

If there’s a meeting you have to go to
You’ll need to know the time and place
Something that can help with one of these things
Has two or three hands over its face

~

This things has hands and a face
But it doesn’t have any eyes
If you rotate to the right
It means you are turning _ _ _ _ _ wise

~

What Am I?

I’m usually round but I’m not a pizza base
I tell people something but I don’t have a mouth
I have numbers on me but I’m not a phone
I have hands but I don’t have any fingers
