Stairs Riddles

August 30, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

Here are five riddles for kids where the answer is a set of stairs, so they’re perfect for using with all of our other riddles about household items.

The first four of them are rhyming riddles, with the word ‘stairs’ completing the rhyme of the fourth.

The fifth of these is a What Am I? riddle. To use that one, read the first line of it to your kids and have them take a guess at the answer. As the clue is that it’s something that goes up and down but which isn’t a helicopter, they might guess that it’s an airplane, an umbrella or a chimney sweep.

If they don’t guess that it’s some stairs, read your children the second clue and ask them to take another guess. Keep doing this until they either guess that stairs is the answer or they run out of clues.

If your kids give the answer as ‘staircase’ for any of these, that’s also an acceptable answer unless you’ve given them the fourth riddle as that wouldn’t rhyme.

You might have these in your home
Although it’s not a door
You can go up and down them
To get between each floor

~

To get around in a shopping mall
You might use an elevator
Or you might walk up and down what’s like
A non-moving escalator

~

If an elevator’s not working
I am what you would have to use
So you can get to another floor
To go quickly, take my steps in twos

~

You can find these in some homes
But they are not dining chairs
You can walk up and down these
Which means they’re a set of _ _ _ _ _ _

~

What Am I?

I go up and down but I’m not a helicopter
I can be climbed but I’m not a mountain
I can be a flight but I don’t have any wings
I have steps but I’m not a ladder
I help you get between floors but I’m not an elevator

Table Riddles

August 25, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

Here are seven riddles for kids where a table is the answer for each of them. These ideas are therefore great for using with all of our other household item and furniture riddles.

The first six of these riddles rhyme, with the word ‘table’ completing the rhyme of the sixth.

The seventh of these is a What Am I riddle. To use that one, read the first line to your children and have them take a guess at what they think the clue might be referring to. As the clue is that it’s something that has four legs but isn’t a camel, they might guess that it’s a cat, dog or a chair.

If they don’t guess that the answer is a table, read them the second clue and ask them to take another guess. Keep going until they either work out that a table is the correct answer or they run out of clues.

This thing is often made of wood
I’m not talking about a stick
When listing all the elements
It comes after periodic

~

I am a piece of furniture
Which is often made of wood
If you need to eat your dinner
Sitting at me would be good

~

When you are feeling hungry
Then you will often eat at this
When you are playing ping pong
It comes before the word ‘tennis’

~

Although I am not a plate
Your dinner is put on me
I can be periodic
For your bedside or coffee

~

I sometimes have leaves
But I’m not a tree
I’m sometimes bedside
And sometimes coffee

~

This is something with four legs
But it isn’t an animal
It’s a piece of furniture
You eat at it – it’s a _ _ _ _ _

~

What Am I?

I have four legs but I’m not a camel
I’m flat on top but I’m not a horse
I sometimes have leaves but I’m not a tree
I come after coffee but I’m not a shop
I have food put on me but I’m not a plate

Window Riddles

August 23, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

Here’s a collection of six riddles for kids where the answer is a window, so there are perfect for using with all of our other household item riddles.

The first four of these are rhyming riddles, while the fifth is a one line riddle which also has an internal rhyme.

The sixth of these asks your kids What Am I? To use that idea, read the clue that’s on the first line to your children and ask them to take a guess as to what they think the answer might be. As the clue is that it’s something that has a frame but which isn’t a bicycle, they might guess that it’s a pair of glasses, a door or a photograph.

If they don’t guess that a window is the answer, read them the second clue and have them take another guess. Keep doing this until they either guess correctly that it’s a window or they run out of clues.

This might be open when it’s hot
And be closed if it has rained
If you look on some old churches
This has glass that has been stained

~

This is something found throughout the house
Of that you can be very certain
Made of glass so you can see through it
But sometimes covered by a curtain

~

There are a lot of me on schools
On a car and your home too
Made of glass and can be opened
In order to let air through

~

Here’s a household item riddle
So it’s time to use your brain
This is an item with a frame
And some glass that’s called a pane

~

I help to keep out rain and I’m always a pane

~

What Am I?

I have a frame but I’m not a bicycle
I’m found throughout the house but I’m not a photo
I’m sometimes tinted but I’m not a pair of sunglasses
I’m mostly made of glass but I’m not a fish tank
I can often be opened or closed but I’m not a door

Key Riddles

August 18, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of household item riddles continues today with a set of riddles for kids that all have a key as their answer.

The first five of these are rhyming riddles, while the sixth is a one line riddle that has a rhyme internally.

The seventh idea is a What Am I riddle. To use that one, read the clue that’s on the first line to your kids and ask them to try guessing what they think it is that’s being described. As the clue is that it’s something that gets cut but doesn’t bleed, they might guess that it’s a vegetable, a piece of fruit or their hair.

If they don’t guess that the correct answer is a key, read them the clue that’s on the second line and have them try guessing again. Keep doing this until they either guess that a key is the answer or they run out of clues.

I get turned but I’m not a page
I get put in a lock but I’m not a wrestler

Television Riddles

August 16, 2016 By Stephen Pepper

We’re continuing with our series of riddles for kids about household items with another item that you might find in a living room – a television.

The first three of these are rhyming riddles (with the word ‘television’ completing the rhyme of the third), while the fourth is a one line riddle that also has an internal rhyme.

The fifth and final one of these is a What Am I riddle. To use that one, read the clue that’s on the first line to your children and ask them to guess what they think the answer might be. As the clue is that it’s something that has a plug but which isn’t a sink, they might guess that it’s a bathtub, vacuum cleaner or phone charger.

If they don’t guess that the answer is a television, read them the second clue and have them take another guess. Keep doing this until they either guess that a television is the correct answer or they run out of clues.
