Pencil Riddles

September 17, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of school riddles continues today with six that have pencil as their answer.

The first five of these are rhyming riddles, while the final one asks your kids What Am I?

To use that sixth idea, read the first line to your children and ask them to guess what they think the answer is.

They might have a hard time thinking of something that’s pink at the end which isn’t lipstick, so if they don’t guess that it’s a pencil, read them the clue on the second line and ask them to take another guess.

Keep going until they either guess correctly or they run out of clues.

Although my center contains lead
It isn’t very tough
And so you need to sharpen it
In order to draw stuff

~

This is an item you use
To write something to be read
You keep it sharp on one end
In the middle there is lead

~

I’m something that you can write with
When I’ve been used I’m not as long
I often have an eraser
In case you write down something wrong

~

I can come in many colors
Like red, yellow, orange, blue or green
When you put my lead on paper
Your drawings or writing can be seen

~

This is a writing instrument
Which you might keep inside of a case
With ones which are mechanical
Push down to have lead come out the base

~

What Am I?

I’m sometimes pink at one end but I’m not lipstick
I can come in many different colors but I’m not a car
I can become blunt but I’m not a knife
I contain lead but I’m not metallic
I’m a writing instrument but I’m not a pen

Paper Riddles

August 20, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

Our series of school riddles for kids is continuing today with a set that have paper as their answer.

These could therefore also be used with many of our other themes such as art, office and trees.

The first four of these are rhyming riddles, with the fifth asking your children What Am I?

To use that last one, read the first line to your kids and have them take a guess at the answer. As the clue mentions something that can cut, they might suggest scissors or a saw.

If they didn’t guess that the answer is paper, read them the clue on the second line and ask them to guess again. Keep doing this until they either answer correctly or they run out of clues.

I do not get put on a bed
Even though I am a sheet
Instead put me in a binder
To keep your desk nice and neat

~

I sometimes have lines on me
And other times I am blank
I’m made from a cut down tree
Although I am not a plank

~

Plenty of sheets
But no bed in sight
It can cut you
But it doesn’t bite

~

What is this thing that you use at school?
In English it has horizontal lines
In Art it will usually be plain
And for graphs in Math it will have gridlines

~

What Am I?

I can cut but I’m not a knife
I sometimes have paint put on me but I’m not a wall
I come from trees but I’m not a fruit
I’m a sheet but I don’t get put on a bed
I get put in a printer but I’m not ink

Paint Riddles

August 18, 2015 By Stephen Pepper

It’s almost time for your kids to go back to school, so in case you wanted to organize some fun activities in preparation for that, we’re starting a new series of school riddles.

Today’s collection all have ‘paint’ as their answer, so these also go well with many of our other themes such as art, color and household items.

The first three of these rhyme, while the fourth is a What Am I? riddle. To use that final riddle, read the clue on the first line to your children and ask them to guess the answer. As it’s something that comes in a can which isn’t food, they might suggest something like a beverage or hairspray.

If they don’t guess that it’s paint, read them the second clue and have them guess again. Keep doing this until they either work out that the answer is paint or they run out of clues.

It might be worth wearing an apron
To keep your clothes nice and smart
So your brush doesn’t splash this on you
When making a piece of art

~

You often use it with a brush
But not the kind used on your hair
Add it nicely to some canvas
So that people will stop and stare

~

Even though it comes in a can
This is something you shouldn’t eat
Instead you add it to the walls
To make a room look really neat

~

What Am I?

I sometimes come in a can but I’m not food
I sometimes come in a bottle but I’m not a beverage
I come in different colors but I’m not a rainbow
I’m sometimes used with canvas but I’m not a tent
I’m used with a brush but I’m not toothpaste
